Volunteer Life Brigade members have been gathering in South Shields to celebrate the 50th anniversary of a dramatic sea rescue. The Lebanese steamer the Adelfotis was blown onto the beach by gale force winds. The captain and 22 members of his crew were rescued by breeches buoy.
A ceremony is taking place to commemorate the 50th anniversary of a ship rescue. The Adelfotis II became stranded off the coast of South Shields in 1963.
