The announcement that 33 sports clubs across the North East will receive almost two million pounds worth of extra funding has been welcomed as "tremendous news."
One of the benefactors of the cash boost, Derwenthaugh Boat Station, is planning to use their £50,000 grant to build an accommodation unit alongside their existing boating facilities.
"This grant from Sport England is tremendous news for the provision of watersport especially for young people on Tyneside.
The North East lags behind most of the UK in having high level facilities and this will help redress the balance."
