A man is in hospital in a critical condition after he was attacked in South Shields with what is believed to have been a metal pole.
Around 9:25pm on Friday February 8th a man was walking in South Eldon Street when he was approached by a group of three men who then assaulted him.
The 35-year-old suffered a fractured skull and was taken to the RVI in Newcastle - where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Police are describing the attack as "a serious assault", and a section of South Eldon Street had to be temporarily closed. Enquiries into the assault are ongoing.

"This was a vicious assault that left the victim with serious injuries.
This attack happened in the open and it's possible that people passing the area may have seen what happened or may know something that could help us locate those responsible and I'd urge them to get in touch with us as soon as possible.
We have had extra officers in the area throughout the weekend speaking with residents and offering reassurance and enquiries into the assault are ongoing."
