Five arrested after Newcastle shop robbery

Five people have been arrested after a robbery where a member of staff was hit over the head with a bottle and a till stolen from an off-license in Newcastle.

The robbery happened shortly before eight o'clock on the evening of Sunday February 17th at Joel Express in West Road.

Two men came into the shop, struck a member of staff over the head with a bottle before stealing the till and running off.

The stolen till was recovered nearby.

The member of staff was taken to hospital for treatment before being discharged. His injuries are not thought to be serious.

Police have arrested five people in connection with the robbery, two men aged 20, two boys aged 16 and a 15-year-old boy.

"Officers attended a report that a robbery was taking place at this location and following enquiries five people have been arrested in connection with it.

We're doing everything possible to establish what has happened and I'd urge any witnesses or anyone with information to contact police as soon as possible."
