Appeal after 'unprovoked' Newcastle assault

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted in Newcastle in the early hours of Sunday February 17th.

A 20-year-old man was approached around 2.15 am by another man at Grainger Street in the city centre. The man spoke to him briefly and then punched him in the face.

The 20-year-old was taken to the RVI hospital for treatment for a broken jaw.

The man who is believed to have attacked him is:

  • White
  • Aged in his late 20s
  • About 6ft 3 ins to 6 ft 4 ins tall
  • Of stocky build with a large belly
  • Short blonde hair and facial stubble
  • Wearing a blue and white thin-striped shirt

Following the assault, he walked off towards the Bigg Market area with another man who is:

  • White
  • 5 ft 7 ins to 5 ft 8 ins tall
  • Of medium build
  • Aged in his late 20s
  • Short dark hair - shorter on the sides and longer on the top and gelled down with a fringe
  • Wearing a long-sleeved white top

"This appears to be an unprovoked assault and the victim has suffered a broken jaw. There's no place for violence in our communities and we're doing everything possible to trace the man responsible for this assault.

"I'd urge any witnesses to this assault or anyone with information about who is responsible to get in touch with police at the earliest opportunity."
