Police are appealing for witnesses following two car crashes, which occurred a short time apart, on the A19 near Northallerton and left a man in a critical condition.
The first crash happened on the southbound carriageway shortly before 1.10am on Tuesday February 19th, close to the junction for Kirby Sigston when a lorry crashed into a black Ford Focus, causing the car to be shunted off the carriageway.
Although the lorry driver did not stop at the time, he has since been identified.
The second crash happened close to the junction for Over Silton, also on the southbound carriageway, at approximately 1.20am, and involved a heavy goods vehicle and the man who had been driving the Ford Focus, who was standing on the road.
The 35-year-old man from Thirsk suffered a serious head injury and was taken to James Cook University Hospital, where he currently remains in a critical condition.
