Two jailed after serious assault in South Tyneside

Two men have been jailed following an assault in South Tyneside that left a man seriously injured in hospital.

Mark Guy and Robert Atkinson, both from South Shields, pleaded guilty to wounding a 45-year-old man in the Laygate area of South Tyneside on September 7th, 2012.

29-year-old Guy also admitted an offence of criminal damage, with intent to endanger life, which had happened later on 10 September 2012. He was sentenced to six years in prison.

Atkinson was also given a prison sentence of two years.

Detective Inspector Paul Woods said:

"These men carried out a vicious attack on a total stranger which left their victim seriously injured in hospital.

"Just days after the assault, Guy cut through a gas pipe putting dozens of homes at risk and causing concern and distress to the occupants.

"Now Atkinson and Guy are starting significant sentences and I hope that the people whose lives have been affected by their behaviour will take comfort from the fact that justice has been done today."
