North Yorkshire councils face disbanding

Proposals are again being raised to look at disbanding eight councils across North Yorkshire and replacing them with fewer unitary authorities.

The leader of Labour Group on Scarborough Council, Cllr Eric Broadbent, says it would save money, although critics say any changes would be costly.

England's biggest county is currently served by seven district councils and the county council. Proposals to create a single unitary authority were thrown out in 2007.

Leaders and Chief Executives of the authorities are meeting at County Hall in Northallerton, where the latest suggestions will be raised.
