Council meets to discuss future of Sunderland's Crowtree site

Work is expected to begin on the demolition of the Sunderland leisure centre in May Credit: Sunderland City Council

Sunderland City Council is meeting to discuss the future of one of the city's leisure centres.

The council had previously confirmed that Crowtree leisure centre would close and be demolished to make way for further development in the city centre.

Councillors are now meeting to look into the future of the site and what the land will be used for by looking over a report into the area.

Dependent upon the council's decision, work is expected to begin on the demolition of the leisure centre in May, and to be completed by the end of 2013.

Councillor Mel Speding, the City Council's Cabinet Secretary, said:

"This report outlines how the Crowtree site will create a development opportunity for retail and other suitable city centre uses.

"The report notes how this development opportunity is part of the council's ongoing plans for improving the economic performance of the city centre as outlined in our Economic Masterplan."
