Two people hit by van in Darlington

Two pedestrians have been taken to hospital after they were hit by a van outside a Darlington supermarket.

A 58-year-old man and a woman aged 44 were injured in the collision outside Morrisons on North Road.

The driver of the Vauxhall Combo van was also injured and is being treated in hospital.

A Durham Police spokeswoman said one of the pedestrians suffered head injuries and the other facial injuries.

"We got a call at about 9.45am today to reports of a vehicle colliding with two pedestrians outside Morrisons supermarket on North Road, in Darlington.

"A 58-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, one with head injuries, one with facial injuries.

"The driver of the van, a Vauxhall Combo van, was also injured and is being treated in hospital."

The road was closed in both directions and police advised drivers to avoid the area at the time.

The road has since reopened.
