A 43-year-old man has died, whilst in police custody, in Washington.
Police arrested the man at his home in Houghton on Thursday, after he failed to appear at Gateshead Magistrates' Court accused of possessing an offensive weapon.
The man was seen by doctors whilst in custody before he was taken to hospital where he died.
The incident has been reported to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and Northumbria Police is fully co-operating with their investigation.
