Police are describing an attack that took place in Sunderland as a "homophobic hate crime" on a female couple in their twenties.
They two women were set upon by a gang of youths after heading out for some food at a local chip shop.
Detectives say the gang launched an unprovoked attacked on one of the women before turning on her partner when she arrived to help.
