Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, has outlined plans for a £100bn investment aimed at kick-starting economic growth.
There has been disappointment in the region after a proposal to dual the A1 was not included in investment plans.
It was hoped that long-delayed plans to dual the A1 road through Northumberland would finally be given the green light. It follows decades of campaigning for full dualling of the route between Newcastle and the Scottish Border.
There are plans to improve the A19 between Newcastle and South Shields.
