Police say alleged homophobic attack may not have taken place

Police investigating an alleged homophobic attack on two women in Sunderland now say the reports that they were targetted by up to 20 youths appear to have been misleading.

Officers received a report that two women were abused and physicaly attacked by a large gang in the Ryhope area.

But after checking CCTV footage, it has now emerged that the two women may in fact have been fighting each other.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said they will always take reports of hate crimes very seriously.
