Murdered man had been "abusive for years"

A jury has been told that a pensioner whose body was found in a freezer in Newcastle had been abusive to his partner for years.

The body of Peter McMahon was discovered at a flat in the Elswick area of the city last December.

His girlfriend Sharon Swinhoe, and her friends Joseph Collins and Ronald Douglas, are accused of murdering him and concealing his body.

Giving evidence today, Sharon Swinhoe claimed that Peter McMahon had regularly assaulted her, and on one occasion had locked her in her house, although no charges were ever brought.

All three deny murder and the trial continues.
