Gateshead cyclist injured by electric cable

A cyclist suffered serious injuries when he hit an overhead electric cable that had come loose and fallen into the road in Gateshead.

The 23-year-old man was cycling on Kibblesworth Bank near the junction with the Grange Estate when he collided with the cable at around 11.20am on Saturday.

Police said the cable had been dislodged from its mountings and swung down into the road.

Officers believe a large vehicle may have caught the cable, causing it to come loose.

The cyclist was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment.

He suffered serious facial and head injuries and his condition was described as stable.

Anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident or who has any information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191.
