A man is being treated for hypothermia after being rescued when his kayak capsized off the coast near Whitburn.
The RNLI, lifeguards, the coastguard and a police helicopter were all sent out to help the man who had been spotted clinging to a rock.
A lifeguard swam to the man and towed him back to shore.
He was taken to Sunderland Royal Infirmary.
