Fishing vessel is beached

A fishing vessel beached in South Shields.

At around 6.30am, the Grenaa Star hit the South Pier at Tynemouth and started to take on water.

The Coastguard were called and, assisted by other fishing vessels, it was able to beach on Herd Sands.

The skipper of the vessel suffered a minor injury.

"The vessel sustained slight damage, but there is no evidence of pollution. Now that the situation is stable on scene an assessment will be made regarding the refloating of the vessel."

– Mike Pupplett, Humber Coastguard Watch Manager
