Historic antique returns home after 80 years

A businessman has returned a historic antique he discovered by chance at a car boot sale almost 30 years ago back to his old University.

The antique plinth was originally presented to Sunderland Technical College (now the University of Sunderland) Old Students Association in 1934, but somehow ended up at a car boot sale in Sunderland in the 1980s.

Former student Uday Dholakia OBE spotted the silver wrapped around the item and decided it must be of value and immediately bought it for just £12.

Now nearly 30 years on, the opportunity to return the plinth to its original owners came up when economic and computing graduate Uday was invited back to the University of Sunderland to give a talk about his own successful career and experiences of Wearside to current students.
