An 18-year-old Russian student has pleaded guilty to the manufacturing of an explosive substance after chemicals were discovered at a Newcastle University student accommodation campus in June 2014.

Police: "University buildings evacuated as a precaution"

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said officers had evacuated a Newcastle University building as a precaution so "potentially suspicious" items could be recovered and examined.

Police are currently searching a Newcastle University building. The investigation is in the early stages and is ongoing.

A man aged 18 has been arrested in connection with the investigation and is helping with enquiries.

Potentially suspicious items have been found and the building has been evacuated as a precaution so the items can be recovered and examined.

Enquiries are in the early stages and we are working closely with Newcastle University.

There is currently no cause for concern for students and the wider community.
