Fire crews are at the scene of a large fire on land near the Metro Radio Arena, close to the centre of Newcastle.
Details of what caught alight are presently unclear, but thick black smoke could be seen from miles away.
One eyewitness said flames had spread to surrounding trees and vegetation.
