MP says devolution plans for North East are a step forward

A Newcastle MP has welcomed the news that plans for North East devolution have moved a step closer.

Proposals were put to the Government several months ago and it's understood talks are now moving to the next stage.

An agreement would see the region have a directly elected mayor, and would bring about a major change to the way decisions affecting the North East are made.

Chi Onwurah, the Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central, says it's a step forward but it's important to see what powers are given to the region.
