Uni numbers down 6.4%

ITV News has learned that the increase in university tuition fees - to a maximum of £9,000 a year has not, as some feared, stopped the vast majority of this year's school leavers applying for places.

With the deadline closing this weekend, so far the overall number of applications for places starting in September is down by 6.4%.

But there was only a drop of 1.8% among 18 year olds, those leaving school this summer.

The biggest change by far was a 13.5% drop among those aged 20 and over, so-called mature students.
