Peru cancels Royal Navy visit in display of 'solidarity' over Falklands

Peru have cancelled a scheduled visit from a Royal Navy frigate as a display of "solidarity" with Argentina over the Falkland Islands.

HMS Montrose was due to visit the South American country later this week but the Peruvian government withdrew the invite, a decision which was "taken in the spirit of Latin American solidarity", according to Foreign minister Rafael Roncagliolo.

A spokesman for the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office said officials could have raised the issue with Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne when he visited the country last week.
