MP calls for Qatada deportation

Labour MP Keith Vaz claims Jordanian officials have given the Government "all the assurances it needs" to deport radical cleric Abu Qatada. The MP for Leicester East said:

"In approximately 30 days Abu Qatada may be able to walk free on the streets of the UK. It is important that we accept the word of the King of Jordan and act upon it immediately. I urge the Home Secretary to publish the response she has received from the Jordanians."

In response to the claims from Keith Vaz, the Home Office said:

"Keith Vaz is wrong. No deal has been done with Jordan. As we have said before, we are making good progress in our negotiations with Jordan, and we are confident that when a deal is done, we will have the assurances we need to resume the deportation process which will see Qatada put on a plane."
