Injuries after Gatwick landing

All flights in and out of Gatwick were suspended earlier after a plane made an emergency landing following a technical fault. Runways have since reopened but passengers should expect 'knock-on disruptions'. 15 people have been treated in hospital.

Virgin's safety record

Virgin planes have been involved in several accidents in the past, none of which resulted in any passengers or crew being harmed:

  • In August 2011, a Virgin Boeing 747-400 entered a closed section of the taxiway at ANR Robinson International Airport in Tobago and blew a tyre.
  • In February 2005, a Virgin Airbus A340-600 was diverted to Amsterdam after a fault with the fuel computer system resulted in one engine failing.
  • In November 1997, a Virgin Airbus A340-300 made an emergency landing at Heathrow airport after landing gear jammed
