The veteran newsreader Sir Alastair Burnet, best known for presenting News at Ten for 21 years, has died aged 84. The chief executive of ITN has called Sir Alastair "the greatest newscaster Britain ever produced".

Huw Edwards: 'Alastair Burnet was an inspiration to many'

BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has paid tribute to the veteran broadcaster Sir Alastair Burnet who has died aged 84.

He said:

Alastair Burnet was an inspiration to many of those who are prominent in broadcast journalism today.

Viewers liked and respected his authority and experience, and his understated style.

He represented the best traditions of ITN and his period at the helm of News at Ten was without doubt the best in the programme's distinguished history.
