Downton Abbey's Dame Maggie Smith has won the Emmy Award for best supporting actress in a drama series.

Maggie Smith of Downton Abbey won the Emmy Award for best supporting actress in a drama series.

She plays the Countess of Grantham in the popular PBS series and has won two previous Emmys.

She beat Christina Hendricks of Mad Men, Anna Gunn of Breaking Bad, Joanne Froggatt of Downton Abbey, Christine Baranski of The Good Wife and Archie Panjabi of The Good Wife.

Dame Maggie Smith has won an Emmy for the popular ITV1 series Downton Abbey, while Damian Lewis hailed a "golden age" of television as he scooped best actor for his role in espionage thriller Homeland.
