Residents deny presence of AU troops in Kismayo

Residents of Kismayo have told the BBC that they have seen no Kenyan or Somalian troops in the main part of the city, calling into question claims that al-Shabab has lost control of the city.

Some said al-Shabab fighters have gathered in a district to the north of the city which has seen some skirmishes and shelling by AU forces.

Somalia's al Shabaab rebels have withdrew from the southern Somali city of Kismayu overnight following an assault from the African Union and Kenyan forces. The al Qaeda inspired group vowed to return.
