Eight thousand British soldiers will be made redundant in the latest Ministry of Defence spending cuts, The Mail on Sunday has reported.

Redundancy notices will apparently be issued to servicemen and women shortly after Christmas, including those serving on the frontline in Afghanistan.

The axing will reduce the Army to 86,000, the smallest size since the 1700s, the newspaper said, adding that the latest losses were part of "sudden speeded-up cutbacks".
