Yvette Cooper: The police are 'guardians'

The shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper has quoted the father of modern policing Robert Peel during her speech at the Labour Party conference.

Peel said: "The police are the public, the public are the police".

Mrs Cooper added: "British police are not guards, they are guardians unlike so many foreign forces they are unarmed and like British police officers themselves we are proud of that tradition".

The Labour leader Ed Miliband has condemned the delegate who heckled a schoolgirl who explained to the party's conference how her academy school encouraged the arts. The person shouted: "A lot of comprehensives do the same."
