Sheffield Wednesday Chris Kirkland has told the Sun newspaper that "the thug who attacked me must be jailed for years."
The former England goalkeeper, 31, was hit in the face by a pitch intruder after Leeds had equalised in the 1-1 draw at Hillsborough.
He told the Sun: “It has to be years in jail, not months.
“People must be punished by the courts for this behaviour - and the football authorities must take firm action too.”
A hooligan who ran on to the pitch and assaulted a goalkeeper during a Championship football match has been identified by police.
South Yorkshire Police have vowed to work with Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday to find the fan who assaulted goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.
