Greek unemployment hits 25.4%

Greece's unemployment rate scaled a new record of 25.4 percent in August from a revised 24.8 percent in July, the country's statistics service ELSTAT has said.

Petrol bombs are being thrown in Athens

Things are going from bad to worse in Athens tonight.

Protesters are throwing fireworks and petrol bombs as clouds of tear gas cover Syntagma Square.

The police have now cleared half of the area outside Greece's parliament building, but they are involved in running battles with campaigners on the city's streets.
