Governor Cuomo: Hurricane Sandy cost New York $33 billion

The New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that Hurricane Sandy has cost the state $33 billion (£20.7 bn) in damage and economic loss.

Speaking in a televised update, he instructed residents to photograph and get rid of damaged goods instead of keeping them as evidence for insurance companies.

He said there was a risk that excess debris in the streets could become "additional projectiles" in high winds.


New Yorkers face fuel rationing

The mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg has ordered rationing of petrol in the city following Hurricane Sandy.
