The Liberal Democrat deputy leader Simon Hughes has warned that the dangers of an escalating conflict between Israel and Gaza "cannot be exaggerated". He said:
The last thing needed now in the Middle East and North Africa is an escalating conflict spilling out from Gaza.
The rocket attacks on Israel by Hamas are unjustified, should never have happened and should end immediately.
But the Israeli government must not overreact, must not launch a ground attack on Gaza and should seek to de-escalate the tensions on the ground.
Today's bombing in Tel Aviv is reminiscent of six years ago and could mark a serious escalation in the conflict.
A truce in Gaza suits all sides but none of the groups seem interested in a long-lasting solution.
A complex system of air defences has been instrumental in protecting Israel's population from incoming rockets.
