The nation's official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, or United States of Mexico, which was adopted in 1824 in a bid to emulate the USA.

However, President Calderon now wants to change his country's name to Mexico - as the nation is already known across the world.

He said: "The name of our country no longer needs to emulate that of other nations. Forgive me for the expression, but Mexico's name is Mexico."
