Peter Spindler, Head of Specialist Crime Operations at the Metropolitan Police, said today that 450 people had come forward with accusations of offences relating to Jimmy Savile.
"Of that 450, we have recorded 199 allegations of crime against him, and 31 of those specifically relate to allegations of rape by Savile," he said.
He added that of the total number of people who came forward, 82% were women and 80% were children when the offences are alleged to have taken place.
"Savile's offending peaked in the 70s," he said.
