Self-portrait defaced by artist to go on display

A self-portrait defaced by the artist after it was described as "flattering" will go on display at the National Portrait Gallery.

Scottish artist Craigie Aitchison slashed the artwork after a visitor to his studio suggested he looked good in it.

Aitchison held onto the painting until his death in 2009 and it was only recently bought by the gallery.

The National Portrait Gallery's curator of 20th Century portraits, Paul Moorhouse, said of the acquisition, "We are delighted that this fascinating self-portrait survived the artist's momentary destructive doubts and can now be seen by future generations".
