'Plebgate' probe defended

The senior civil servant who carried out an investigation for Prime Minister David Cameron into allegations that his Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell swore at police insisted that he did a "competent" job and came to the right conclusion.

Mitchell: Crowds in log book not seen on CCTV

Andrew Mitchell was shown CCTV footage obtained by Dispatches and Channel 4 News that shows the pavement outside Downing Street when the altercation known as "Plebgate" took place.

Mr Mitchell told the programme, "The alleged [police] log book talked about crowds of people deeply shocked watching and listening".

"What this CCTV shows is that there aren't any crowds of people", he added.
