Endangered whale beached in New York City

An endangered finback whale measuring almost 20 metres is in peril after becoming beached in the Queens district of New York City.

Local police and volunteer firefighters spent Wednesday morning using a hose to spray water over the whale. Rescuers from the Riverhead Foundation said its chances of survival were slim.

Finback whales can grow to more than 20 metres and are second in size only to the blue whale.
