Italian Premier Mario Monti has announced that he will lead a new coalition camapaign who support his "ethical" idea of politics, seeking to secure a second mandate in office.

Monti ended weeks of speculation as to whether he would seek a new term, and told a news conference that the ballot list in February would carry the name "Monti Agenda for Italy".

He said: "Italy must have an evolution in its politics," he said, instead of the "traditional axis that consists of right and left"

Monti was appointed premier 13 months ago after his predecessor Silvio Berlusconi failed to stop Italy from sliding deeper into the eurozone debt crisis.
