Demonstrators have gathered in New Delhi following the death of a female student who was gang-raped and beaten on a bus in the Indian capital.

The 23-year-old victim died early this morning at a hospital in Singapore, where she had been transferred for treatment.

As news of her death reached New Delhi, hundreds of policemen sealed off the area surrounding India Gate - where India's government building is located - in anticipation of protests.

The protesters are demanding stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape, which is currently punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment.

Delhi gang rape trial begins
