Delhi gang rape trial begins

The fast-track trial of five men accused of gang rape and murder has begun today in Delhi. A sixth suspect is due to be tried in a juvenile court because he is under 18.

Indian New Year parties cancelled after gang-rape death

Many New Year celebrations have been cancelled in India as a mark of respect following the death of a 23-year-old student after a brutal gang-rape.

Following the attack, protesters and politicians have called for tougher rape laws, major police reforms and a transformation in the way the nation treats its women.

The physiotherapy student died two days ago from internal wounds in a Singapore hospital. Six men have been arrested and charged with murder in the December 16 attack.

India's army and navy scrapped their New Year's celebrations, as did Sonia Gandhi, head of the ruling Congress party. Hotels and clubs across the capital also said they would forego their usual parties.
