The Justice Minister Chris Grayling has told the Daily Telegraph that he will review sentencing guidelines.

Under the current system, the minister claims that hundreds of criminals are being released automatically despite only serving half their sentence.

He said that crime rates are down because more offenders are being locked up and that he wouldn't cut prison places.

His comments are a significant divergence from those of his predecessor Ken Clark, who said that prison was an expensive and ineffectual way of cutting crime.
