Football commentator Jon Champion has been censured by broadcaster ESPN for calling Liverpool striker Luis Suarez "a cheat" following his controversial handball goal in the FA Cup.

Suarez scored against Mansfield Town after the ball had clearly struck his hand, but the match officials deemed the contact was non-deliberate in yesterday's televised Third Round tie.

Commentating on the goal, Champion said: "Suarez has scored by illegal, nefarious means. This is the work of a cheat."

While widely endorsed by many watching fans, the comments also apparently provoked a number of complaints to ESPN, prompting today's apology.

The channel said: “Comments during the Mansfield v Liverpool match caused offence where none was intended and we have spoken to our commentator about this incident.”
