MPs vote for 1% benefits cap

MPs have voted in favour of a proposed 1 per cent cap on raising benefits by a majority of 56. Ministers say the cap is needed because it is unfair that state handouts have been rising twice as fast as wages during recent years of austerity.

Govt must win public debate on benefits and HoC vote

The Government is likely to win a vote this evening on a bill to cap benefit rises, but today's debate in the House of Commons was one they were desperate to win.

The issue, they believe, puts Labour on the side of the unemployed and the benefit claimants, instead of those in work whose pay has risen little.
