Parents could be hit with bills running to thousands of pounds, a regulator has warned.

It comes after complaints about children accessing smartphone apps increased by 300% in a year.

Figures from PhonepayPlus, the UK regulator of premium rate telephone services, suggest that two in three 11 to 16-year-olds have downloaded a free app on their phones.

The report warned that parents who do not speak to their children about what they spend on smartphones could find themselves on the receiving end of some seriously high bills.
