The Ministry of Defence will announce 5,000 army redundancies today but personnel serving, about to be deployed or just returning from Afghanistan will be exempt, according to reports.

The job losses announced this morning will be followed by another tranche of sackings later in the year or early next year, The Daily Telegraph reports.
