Trident warhead manufacture plant closed due to corrosion

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that a plant which manufactures warheads for Trident submarines has been closed after corrosion was found in a column.

It was found after a routine inspection at the plant near Aldermaston in Berkshire, which is run by company AWE (Atomic Weapons Establishment).

There has been no impact on any of our submarine programmes as a result of the Improvement Notice issued to AWE.

A regular inspection showed signs of corrosion in a steel column and AWE is now working to inspect the whole building, assess the extent of the problem and consider how best to rectify it.

Routine operations at the building have been suspended as a precaution.

– Ministry of Defence spokesperson

There was no-one available from AWE to comment on the closure.
