Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil sees an early spring

Punxsutawney Phil, America's most famous groundhog, emerged from his burrow to the glare of cameras and the cheers of thousands of spectators and offered his annual weather prediction.

As he failed to see his shadow he announced that an early spring is on the way.

Each year thousands of fans from as far away as Australia and Russia attend the wildly popular event in the tiny western Pennsylvania town

According to legend, if the rodent emerges from his hole and sees his shadow, six more weeks of freezing temperatures and snow are on the way.

This year, however, Phil did not see his shadow, meaning an early spring should be expected.
